Church collections for disasters crosses $1.7m mark

Arising from the recent disasters in Myanmar and China, the Archdiocese has made two appeals for the Disaster Aid Fund.
The first appeal made in the weekend of 10/11 May 2008 raised more than $770,000 for Cyclone Nargis victims. The second appeal which started in the first weekend of June following the Sichuan Earthquake has collected more than $950,000 to date.
The Archdiocese Crisis Coordination Team (ACCT) which manages the Disaster Aid Fund has funded some immediate relief work but is now focused on longer term reconstruction projects in these two countries.

So far, ACCT has committed about $810,000 in funding support. Projects it is funding include $300,000 to the Myanmar Disaster Relief Committee of the Archdiocese of Yangon to help with relief and rehabilitation work; $210,000 to the Society of Jesus for shelters, education assistance and emergency assistances for more 10,000 victims; $85,000 to the Myanmar Families Commission to provide counselling for the victims of the disasters and $200,000 for Jinde Charities to carry out relief work in the Sichuan area. In addition, it has provided minor financial support to several religious groups and Mercy Relief who are undertaking relief work in Myanmar
