On the afternoon of May 12, 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan Province, a mountainous region in Western China, killing about 70,000 people and leaving over 18,000 missing. Over 15 million people lived in the affected area, including almost 4 million in the city of Chengdu.
The Archdiocese Crisis Coordination Team is looking for volunteers for two home-building missions to Chengdu, China. The first 8-day mission will be from the 22nd to 29th of August 2009 with the second will be from 12th to 19th September 2009.
Catholics aged 21 to 60, in good health are strongly encouraged to take this opportunity to live their faith in a home building mission for those that lost their homes in the May 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China.
Catholic volunteers will work with families to rebuild earthquake-resistant houses as many still do not have homes to call their own and ACCT has chosen to work with Habitat for Humanity to send two teams of 12 each in their home building effort for the Chengdu community.
No prior experience is necessary. All we ask is that you bring enthusiasm and a smile with you. Families are welcomed (As the area is still defined as a disaster zone, we will only be accepting those age 21 and above). ACCT will be subsidizing all volunteers but each volunteer will need to contribute S$850 to help cover the cost of air and land transfers, build materials as well as food and accommodation during the 8-day mission.
