When the Tsunami struck Asia on 26 December 2004, everyone throughout the world was caught by surprise and the horror of the devastation began to set in as the media began to report extensively on the disaster. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore raised $1.5 million towards this humanitarian cause. The Archdiocesan Crisis Coordination Team was then set up to ensure that the donations were properly used.
The Tsunami taught us the importance of having sufficient funds at hand in order to be able to respond swiftly to the needs of those who become victims to disasters, natural or otherwise. In July 2006, the Archdiocese established a “Disaster Aid Fund” through a weekend collection
This Fund will be drawn upon to provide immediate financial and other kinds of aid (e.g. medical relief) to help those affected by disasters and crisis. Following the Tsunami, there were numerous other disasters including the massive landslide in the Philippines, the earthquake in Pakistan and the earthquake in Indonesia.
The Fund is managed by the Archdiocese Crisis Coordination Team (ACCT)
